Enhancing the ANSI Z133 Safety Standard’s Effectiveness with Case Studies
This project intends to promote safety for utility arborists by doing two primary tasks:
- To gather lessons learned by arborists at a particular project (as the result of an accident or near miss) and to communicate those learnings to a wider audience than merely those arborists who were there at the time; and
- Using those lessons learned as case studies for a companion guide to accompany the ANSI Z133 Standard. It is believed that despite the Z133 being very well written, it may at times be hard to relate the rules to real-life situations. By providing case studies of examples where a failure to follow the Z133 resulted in injury or damage (or might have, in the case of a near miss), utility arborists will be better able to understand the applicability of the rules to everyday occurrences. Additionally, this companion guide will also include illustrative toolbox talks so that safety professionals can have an additional resource for daily communication discussions.
