John & Bonnie Moran are pillars of the community in their hometown, deeply engaged in local affairs. On the national scene, they are life-long, pro-active advocates for arboriculture. Several years ago they took steps to designate the TREE Fund as a beneficiary of their estate, establishing them as Charter Members of the TREE Fund’s prestigious Heritage Oak Society.
Inspired by his father, a fireman, to volunteer in his community (“As a child, he used to take me to town meetings”), John has always been pro-active. “People need to take an active role, to give time,” he says, “and not just locally. We recognize the need to support research and education. It’s so important in our industry, and our industry supports a cause that is important.”
John’s arboriculture career began with a degree in Arboriculture and Park Management from Stockbridge School of Agriculture at the University of Massachusetts. Twenty years ago he and Bonnie started Arbor Care, Inc. in New Fairfield, Connecticut, with an emphasis on arboricultural consulting. Along the way they earned the respect of their peers in the industry as well as such clients as the Astors and Rockefellers of New York. John also served as president of the International Society of Arboriculture (’92-’93) after many years leading the New England Chapter.
As a full-time arboricultural consultant, John designs plant health care programs for municipalities, golf courses, art museums, and commercial and residential properties. He also provides expert witness testimony regarding liability issues for local, state and federal court cases. Bonnie is John’s counterpart in Arbor Care, Inc., running the office while John is in the field.
These partners, married 40 years, see no retirement plans in their future. John currently serves as chair in his third term at the New Fairfield, Connecticut, Zoning Board, and remains active as a 35-year member (and past president) of the Rotary Club of Pleasantville, NY. Bonnie is a longtime board member of the Woman’s Club of Danbury/New Fairfield (a local branch of the General Federation of Women’s Clubs, a national organization).
